A tongue-tie refers to a thick band of tissue called a frenulum that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth. Sometimes, babies are born with particularly thick frenulums that can interfere with their ability to breastfeed and their speech development.
There is also a frenulum that attaches the upper lip to the top of the mouth. When this frenulum is too thick, it can prohibit mobility of the upper lip. Symptoms of lip and tongue-ties include an inability to properly nurse, excessively drooling, and poor weight gain.
