What Are Veneers?

Understanding the basics

Veneers are a dental prosthesis made from high-quality porcelain. Each veneer is shaped just like a natural tooth, and the shell of the veneer is built to fit over your existing tooth. With a set of veneers, you can cover up the fronts of your teeth to cover up issues like chips in your teeth, yellowing or staining, misshapen teeth, and much more.

Veneers are similar in some ways to dental crowns. However, they only cover up the front of the tooth, not the entire tooth, and they also are not intended to fix damaged teeth. Veneers are only usable for cosmetic issues with your smile.

Choosing veneers is a great option if you want a versatile, long-lasting, and natural-looking way to restore your smile in Richardson. With proper care, your smile will look beautiful for years to come.

What To Expect

The Veneer Placement Procedure

After you’ve been approved for veneers, Dr. Engram will schedule your first appointment, where you’ll have your teeth prepared. Dr. Engram will clean your teeth and numb the treatment area, and then will gently remove a thin layer of enamel from each tooth that is getting a veneer.

This enamel must be trimmed to make room for the veneers and to make sure they don’t add any additional bulk to your teeth or change your bite. After your teeth have been trimmed, Dr. Engram will take impressions and images of your teeth, and place a set of temporary resin veneers to protect your teeth until your next appointment.

Your impression and images will be sent to our partner dental lab. Here, lab technicians will design your veneers and build them to fit in perfectly with your other teeth. When they’re done, your veneers will be sent to our office. This entire process usually takes 2-3 weeks.

When your veneers arrive, you’ll come back for your final consultation at Flourish Dental Boutique. Dr. Engram will remove your temporary veneers and clean your teeth, then check the fit of your permanent veneers and bond each one in place. Once all of your veneers have been placed, you’ll be sent home with a brand new smile.

How Long Do

Porcelain Veneers Last?

This mostly depends on how well you care for your teeth. As long as you brush and floss regularly and come to Flourish Dental for regular six-month teeth cleanings and oral exams, your veneers will likely last 10-15 years or longer before requiring repair or replacement.

You also should avoid risky behaviors that could damage your veneers or your natural teeth. Don’t chew hard foods like popcorn kernels or ice with your front teeth, avoid chewing non-food objects like pens, and never use your teeth to do things like open bags and package or to tear tape.
